E te whānau, it's nearly 2025 🤯 - time to get your wātaka/calendars sorted for this new Gregorian year. As usual, we've got you covered here at Reo Māori Mai. This year, the kaupapa for our wātaka is whakataukī & whakatauākī. The perfect way to learn a new one each month!
Whakataukī can be translated to mean proverb, significant saying, formulaic saying, cryptic saying or aphorism - without a known source. They usually contain kernels of wisdom from our tīpuna/ancestors about life, and are sometimes sourced from observations of te taiao/the natural world or significant events. Whakatauākī are the same, but come from a known source/person.
We've chosen a range of different whakataukī and whakatauākī to include in our 2025 wātaka, sourced from wānanga and kaiako over many years, as well as from Ngā Pēpeha a Ngā Tīpuna, nā Mead, H.M. & Grove, N., (1916-1999).
We have two different versions available (both with the same whakataukī/whakatauākī, but in a different order - so you can hang up one of each at the same time 😉):
The wātaka mumura is full of vibrant pinks, purples, greens, oranges and yellows.
The wātaka taetoru has a colour scheme of black, white and red - classic.
Te Kahureremoa Taumata (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) has created the mahi toi/art for both of our wātaka for 2025 (@tekahureretoi on Instagram).
Each wātaka has:
- 13 months: Jan 2025 - Jan 2026
- kupu mino (phonetic translations) for the months of the Gregorian year and days of the week
- key dates (Waitangi, Matariki, school terms, new and full moons, public holidays etc)
- information on the reverse of wātaka for reo around time (more can also be found in our blog here)
Our wātaka are printed in Ōtautahi/Christchurch by Ngāi Tahu printer, Ruruku.
Please note that colours may differ slightly from the photos shown.
